Open House
On September 21,2010, students at Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School were begging and pleading to there parents to let them attend the latest event. At Open House there were magnificent performances by our award winning band, the best dancers in town, also known as the Explorettes, the cheerleaders, and the choir. Open House wasn't just for the fun and entertainment though, and students and parents saw that when Principal Doris Hicks gave a very serious speech on her goals and expectations. She also talked to the parents about uniforms and how she would like them prepared for school the next day.Principal Hicks also used a few students as an example. "It was fun to get on stage and be an example for Principal Hicks" said Beonka Delany, 11. Finally they ended the best Open House yet with parents meeting the outstanding and wonderful staff, and there child's teacher."Open House was fun and I got to find out alot about my teacher " said jonshell Alexander 11. Some students didn't enjoy the program as much as Jonshell when Mykeisha Tenner 11said,"The program was good but could have been better."

MLK supports New Orleans Saints
The spirit of the black and gold is in MLK school. Teachers and students support the New Orleans Saints. To show their support after a win, the school has a black and gold dress-down day. All the students and teachers dress down in their best lack and gold clothing. They also have students who draw pictures of the Saint's symbol, like myself. But one things for sure after the win on September 20, 2010, with a score of 25 to 22 there will have a lot of black and gold spirit going around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School.
The Best Chater School in the City has Direct Instruction
''MLK's Direct Instruction''
MLK Charter School is having Direct Instruction(DI),which is a program when you read on a certain grade level and you work as a group to be a better reader.Mr. Mack is the head of DI.Most students move up in DI because he or she has improved in DI.It is on the 1st and 2nd floor, and in the library. It happens on everyday of the week except on Fridays.
If a teacher has a problem without having DI on Fridays ,they must inform the principal immediately, and now we are going to have a quote from Jada Taylor who is a 5th grader who reads on a 6th grade level in Mrs. Ramsey's homeroom, Jada why do you think DI is important? " DI is important because it gives you instructions to help you work to your certain expectations and to become a better reader." DI is very important to the King Family.

Semaj Hamilton
Sixth Grade Times
My school is having a contest. It is called ''The Starline Banner''. All grades are participating in it. It will start Monday September 27, 2010. Here's a quote by a sixth grade student, 'I really hope my class wins the contest'',says Daryl Evans.
get in new books for the class
Ms.Smith class room needed new books for the student in her class. The reson being is that some student books are missing. some of the student who did not have a book would go in to other people cubies. To get their books case they did not have their. so when the student that had the books go to get theirs they would not be in there. So they would tell Ms.Smith and she would say if you have there book you need to give it back to them. So after it was happen. Ms.Smith and Ms.Johson order new books for the people who did not have a book. So when the books came in for every body who was behind number fifteen had to go up a number and had to check to see if we had all of our books. So if you had to move up. You had to give your old books to the people who gets your old number. If you want to get a new book. All you had to do was ask her and she would give it to you.
Dance Tryouts, So Amazing!!!
We have dance tryouts today. We got out of school at 2:30, dance tryouts was for 3:00, which means we only had 30 minutis to get prepared. We went upstairs and went into the restroom to change clothes.Next, we went into our dance teacher's classroom. We all went in and had to pull a number. Whenshe called our number that meant it was time for us to go into the classroom and do our thing. After she called everyone's number she told us that we can go home. But, she also said that tomorrow our numbers that she pulled will be on her door with our last name to tell weather we made the dance team or not. That is my news article about dance tryouts today!!!

Reading Program Helps Sixth Grade Students
At Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter For Science and Technology, the sixth grade students have a reading program called SSR ( Silent Sustained Reading) that gives them better reading skills. They use this program every week. You have to read for 20 minutes. Then, you have to respond on what you read. After that, your parents have to sign it. Some students like this program but others don't. Sixth grade student, Emmanuel Mitchell said " I like SSR because I like to read." Another sixth grade student, Lawrence Breaux had this to say " I don't like SSR because it is boring." Sixth grade teacher Mrs. Doris Smith said this " absolutely think so. It's research. Researchers have researched that students who read 20 minutes give them better reading skills and this program could open up a whole new world." I do think this program would help students and not only sixth grade but other grades also. This is a fine and educated program. I think all principals around the world should enforce this program in their schools.
"Third Grade Display"
The Third Graders hallway display is fantastic! The title of the poster, they design is "Class of 2020 Third Grade Opening Doors to the Future. The Third Grade teachers Ms.Miles,Ms.Aisola,andMr.Mack thought of them to do that kind of project. That kind of project is like a middle school project.

Students Put Together A Party For Their Teacher
Mrs. Johnson's students surprised her with a marvelous party on September 23, 2010, in King Charter School building at one forty-five. The gave her this party because it was her birthday and they wanted to do something special for her. The students started to gather things and put up decorations for lunch. When it was one forty, she came up and was surprised. This party affected other people because they didnt have enough food and drinks for the other who they invited and wanted to come and join the celebration. A student stated, "I hope she enjoys herself on this special day and i hope she feels surprised." Afterwards the party was gracefully over and her students were dismissed.
Box Tops
This year at M.L.K Charter School 6th grade is starting to collect box tops. You can get box tops from any kind of food item , that is in a box. Such things are cereal boxes, frozen food boxes, snacks, baking mixes, juice boxes and more. By collecting box tops you can get new school supplies. Farrel Elementary School bought a new interactive white board , Benignus Elementarry School , and North Bay Elementary school replaced their playgrounnd set after it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. To submit the box tops , you have to first bundle the box tops into groups of 50 ina zip lock bag. The second step is to complete an online submission form. The last thing to do is send them. If you are thinking about to do the same you can. All you have to do is give your teacher the idea of collecting them, and collect them.

King school gets fit. At King scool, they are nowplaying tennis for their P.E time. Actually, they have a choice they can either play tennis,or take 2,000 steps using a pedometer.
They just started this year. They are doing thism, because they have realized that 50% of King school is overweight! They had to take action. This is why they did it.
The girls have their exercise on Wednesdays. The boys have theirs on Thursdays. The P.E teachers have also sent home a D.V.D to help. It is called " Give up the poundws not the fight."
Eleven year old Kenneth says "I really like P.E, it's fun. Eleven year old Jayla says, " I don't like playing tennis. I think it's lame."
